Let’s be honest — wellness is having a moment. From red-light masks to mushroom coffee, it feels like everyone online is testing the latest biohack.
But let’s also be real: not everything trending is good for you… and not everything “controversial” is actually dangerous.
In today’s newsletter, I’m unpacking 6 wellness remedies that spark a lot of debate. You’ve probably heard influencers rave about some of them, and maybe you’ve been curious (or skeptical).
So I dug into the research — and kept the language super simple — to help you understand what each one actually does, what the science says, and when to be cautious.

🌿 THC & CBD (Cannabis Compounds)
WHAT THEY ARE
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis — it alters your state of mind
CBD (cannabidiol) is non-intoxicating, and may calm the nervous system without causing a high
Both come from cannabis; now legal in many places
WHAT THEY MIGHT HELP WITH
CBD: anxiety, sleep, pain, inflammation
THC: chronic pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea, appetite loss
CONTROVERSY ZONE
CBD has been FDA-approved to treat epilepsy, with some calling it a “natural Xanax”
But THC has been linked to psychosis in young adults and long-term memory issues
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), overuse of CBD is considered “damp” and may contribute to gut imbalances like candida
CAUTION
THC can increase anxiety, impact memory, or feel addictive if misused
Long-term high THC use may blunt motivation and hormone function
CBD is better tolerated but may cause fatigue or digestive issues
🧠 Bottom Line:
CBD = Generally safe, effective for anxiety & inflammation
THC = case-by-case. Potent, but can be risky or present various reactions for different people
💙 Methylene Blue
WHAT IT IS
A synthetic compound first used as a textile dye… Now explored as a compound with surprising brain-boosting potential. It helps mitochondria (your cell’s energy factories) work more efficiently.
WHAT IT MIGHT HELP WITH
Mental clarity, memory
Fatigue, brain fog
Neuroprotection and mitochondrial health
Shown to cross the blood-brain barrier — rare for supplements
CONTROVERSY ZONE
Some say it’s a “limitless pill” for the brain — others warn it’s a neurotoxin at high doses
Biohackers love it; doctors warn of interactions with SSRIs and the risk of serotonin syndrome
Also banned in pregnancy and for people with G6PD deficiency
CAUTION
Do not mix with SSRIs or serotonin-boosting meds
High doses can be toxic
Not safe during pregnancy
Side Effects: Blue urine, mood shifts, and toxicity if overused
Tip: Only use pharmaceutical-grade, low-dose, and cycle intermittently. Pairs well with red light therapy for mitochondrial boost.
🧠 Bottom Line:
Brain fuel if used in small, precise doses. Needs guidance and clean sourcing. Dangerous if mixed with antidepressants or dosed too high.
💊 Ivermectin
WHAT IT IS
A prescription anti-parasitic used globally for decades in both humans and animals. Some alternative circles also explore it for inflammation or immune modulation.
WHAT IT MIGHT HELP WITH
Confirmed parasite infections, scabies
Possibly useful in rosacea or inflammatory skin conditions
Studied for its anti-inflammatory and antiviral potential
Some cancer protocols include it as an immune modulator
CONTROVERSY ZONE
In some countries, it’s praised as a Nobel Prize-winning “wonder drug”
In others, it’s ridiculed as “horse paste” due to misuse during the COVID pandemic
Misuse has led to poisonings, ER visits, and distrust
CAUTION
Not a supplement — it’s a drug, and misusing it can stress your liver and disrupt your microbiome
Side effects like liver strain, gut flora disruption are rare but serious if used incorrectly
Tip: Use short-term, under supervision, and with liver/gut support.
🧠 Bottom Line:
Excellent for parasites. Life-saving in the right context. Misused, it can be toxic and harmful - not for DIY detoxing or longevity use.
🧬 Peptides & Bioregulators
WHAT THEY ARE
Tiny chains of amino acids that signal the body to repair or regulate functions. Some are naturally found in the body.
WHAT THEY MIGHT HELP WITH
BPC-157: gut lining repair, tendon/muscle healing
Epitalon: longevity, sleep support, supports pineal gland, melatonin
Thymic peptides: immune modulation, especially in autoimmune cases
TB-500: wound healing and inflammation reduction
CONTROVERSY ZONE
Some swear peptides reversed chronic disease and aging signs
Others warn they stimulate cell growth — not ideal if you have cancer
Self-injection and sourcing risks are huge (many are unregulated)
CAUTION
Can stimulate unwanted growth (angiogenesis) — not ideal with active cancers
Quality and sourcing vary wildly - online sources often sell fake or contaminated products.
Tip: Use only from medical providers, under medical supervision, in cycles, with targeted goals. Match with rehab and recovery plans.
🧠 Bottom Line:
Exciting but still emerging. High potential with expert support. Incredible for recovery, immune balance, and performance — when guided. Risky if used unsupervised or for the wrong reason.
💧 Molecular Hydrogen
WHAT IT IS
A gas that dissolves into water. Once ingested, H₂ enters cells and reduces oxidative stress at a cellular level.
WHAT IT MIGHT HELP WITH
Exercise recovery
Improves mitochondrial health in aging cells
Subtle anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
CONTROVERSY ZONE
Some call it “anti-aging water”
Others say it’s overhyped with minimal effect in real life
Benefits tend to be subtle, and many users don’t “feel” anything
CAUTION
Don’t expect instant “feel-it” benefits
Not a replacement for electrolytes
Must be consumed fresh for full effect
Tip: Use after workouts or daily as a wellness add-on. Great with CoQ10 or other mito-supports. Look for tablets from trusted brands.
🧠 Bottom Line:
Gentle, generally safe, and a solid addition to a long-term routine. May not be worth the price if expectations are too high.
🖤 Activated Charcoal
WHAT IT IS
A natural binder that traps toxins, gas and chemicals in the digestive tract.
WHAT IT MIGHT HELP WITH
Bloating, food poisoning, alcohol overindulgence
Short-term support during detox (e.g., mold, parasites)
CONTROVERSY ZONE
Some claim it saved them from food poisoning
Others misuse it daily and end up constipated, nutrient-depleted, or worse
Not all brands are clean — sourcing matters
CAUTION
Binds medications and nutrients — always space by 4–8 hours
Can cause constipation if not paired with magnesium, fiber, water
Tip: Rotate with other binders (chlorella, zeolite) and use as needed — not every day.
🧠 Bottom Line:
Excellent for emergencies or binders during detox. Not a daily wellness fix — too many people overdo it.
❓ So… Should You Try These?
The truth is — every body is different. What works wonders for one person might do nothing (or even harm) to another. That’s why it’s so important to evaluate both sides — the benefits and the risks — and make an informed decision that feels right for you.
Stay curious. Ask questions. Listen to your body.
And if you’re ever unsure, speak with a practitioner you trust. A good functional medicine doctor can help you assess whether something fits your body, your labs, and your goals.
I’ve personally tried a few of these wellness trends, and while some made a real difference… others didn’t necessarily live up to the hype or achieve desired results.
I’d love to know — have you tried any of these? Hit reply and tell me what worked… or didn’t.
Warmly,
Viktorija 💛
